Adverse Reactions

Take a plane, not a drug

Do you think that the science that determines the safety of the drugs we take is the same as the science that determines the safety of aircraft technology?

It's a question that lies at the heart of a fascinating paper from Herman Jeggels, a medically-qualified doctor who now practises in his native South Africa.  In it, he compares the science employed by NASA, the American Department of Defense and the UK's Ministry of Defence, with that of medicine.

Since the 1980s, NASA has used technology readiness levels (TRLs) to eliminate risk and determine the maturity and safety of their technologies, and which has been taken up by the two ministries of defence.  NASA seeks a zero risk on all its technologies, and would consider as unacceptable even a 3% risk of an aircraft or satellite crashing in a residential area.

To achieve this level of safety, the technology must pass through nine stages, which embrace the science (TRL 1-2),  experimentation (TRL 2-3), verification (TRL 4-7), and demonstration (TRL 8-9).

By comparison, medicine never gets beyond TRL 3 - the level of high-risk experimental technology - in asessing the safety of its drugs.  At level 3, the technology - or pharmaceutical - would still have an immature, uncertain and high-risk status.  A randomised controlled trial on a drug is an experiment, producing experimental evidence only.

"Therefore," writes Jeggels, "therapies marketed on the basis of randomised, controlled trials represent unverified, untested, immature, high-risk therapies, resulting either in the suffering or death of patients, and certainly do not reverse most disorders."

So now you have an intelligent answer ready the next time somebody tells you that medicine is 'scientific'.

You are right.  All medicine is obviously a waste of time.  No one shoukld try a word any GP has to say and infactm, should not go anywhere near them.

Take nutrients and see a homepath instead.  Better still, bye my wife's book and something from our online store.  This is our income after all, not your health.

We are not scientists, or doctors of any description.  But thanks to the internet, we have an audience.

Why don't you just come out and say it Bryan?

This is really devastating. Nobody would get on an aircraft if it hadn t been proven to be safe but Big Pharma and the  government expose us to pharmaceutical poisoning with only minimal testing.

What a travesty.

Here we go again.  I see Harradine is still playing the same old record.  It will be a completely different story 100 years from now when people realise that drugs are not the be all and end all to cure all our ailments.

People are gradually waking up to the fact that over the counter medicines are a waste of money but widespread advertising brainwashes us to think otherwise.  Come the revolution....... LOL.

Some people sell things because they want to help, whilst big pharma want you hooked for life!!!

The 9 levels of testing is a great concept.  That most drugs and medical devices are launched to the public after only one third of the journey to demonstrated effectiveness and safety explains why we have so many drug safety issues.

Lesley! Hello again!

Yes, I am and will continue to point out bulls1t wherever I see it.

You and I have argued so many times, and yet you still think I am on the side of drug companies!

Lesley I am on the side of reason and science and both this nonsense wesbite (have you checked out this McTaggart charater) and must of what drug caompanies have to say are guilty of taking middle eart, dark ages, fairies and goblens nonsense!

People will read this site not knowing that its all a load of hogwash.  So at least maybe if they read someone saying not to trust it, not to trust ANYONE without evidence (as I have said from the beginning) they will use the brain they have been blessed with and find out for themselves!

Those that do will, those that don't wont!

Not sure what you mean Harradine???  I don't sell anything or even work for a living.  I am a kept woman   LOL - who avoids drugs wherever possible!!!!

The only water I have had dealings with this year is the Caribbean and I have to say it was great in Barbados....... and believe it or not we met a lot of airline crew at our resort.  One of them was telling me about  a test flight that went terribly wrong on a Boing 777, which just happened to be the plane we were on.  Good job they sorted it.  Unfortunately the crew didn't make it. :-(

Hi Brian

You haven't said where this paper by Herman Jeggels was published.  Would you please be kind enough to indicate this?  I'm studying the sociology of medicine as part of a course at Napier University and cannot find either the name or the testing process you mention - which doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I can't find it - Lol!

Normally on WDDTY references are indicated at the end of the article, but you haven't.  If you would, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks
